CATS II

  Reasons for feline obesity include:
  Over-feeding and lack of exercise!
Feeding your cat cheaper pet food
  products which consist mainly of
carbohydrates & little or no protein
Too many cat treats which are made
from mostly sugar & other carbohydrates
  Overweight and actually obese cats
outnumber cats of normal weigh and are
being seen more and more commonly by
  Veterinarians for various disorders.

Genetic problems or physical problems of a particular type
Domestic cats often over-eat out of boredom.

Obesity can cause a host of
 health conditions such as heart
 problems, liver diseases, arthritis,
 diabetes, respiratory problems & a
 very serious disorder called Hepatic
 Lipidosis.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT AN OVERWEIGHT CAT.

  • It is advisable to have more than one cat in a household, so they can socialize among themselves and get at least some exercise.
  • Purchase bouncy, colorful toys that interest your cat for exercise
  • Feed a cat 3 to 4 times a day with small amounts of food.
  • Any cat that is overweight should have a physical exam performed, exact weight measured and blood and urine tests run.

Getting an obese cat to lose weight needs
to be done gradually Cats have a unique
 metabolic response to fasting and
whenever a feline’s food intake is rapidly
and markedly depressed, a serious and
potentially fatal disorder can occur called
 Hepatic Lipidosis.

WHAT IS THE PROPER DIET FOR MY CAT?
The ideal diet of a carnivore should consist of 40-45% Protein, 30% Fat and very little carbohydrate.

Proper protein intake is the key to
 success in a carnivore’s diet.

Cats and dogs being fed soft meat-based
diets have far fewer oral health problems
 than those consuming dry, grain-based
 diets

Cats require a diet with high percentages of protein and fat and low percentages of carbohydrate (grains) if we expect them to remain healthy & active.

On a dry weight basis... where the
  percent of ingredients is determined
without any water in the ration.A
felines diet should contain 35 to 45
percent protein, 40 percent fat, and
possibly just a small percentage of
  carbohydrate.

One of the reasons for the success of a high protein diet for feline weight reduction is the importance of an amino acid called Carnitine.  Carnitine is present in good quantities in muscle tissues, but found in minuscule amounts in vegetable matter.

This amino acid plays an essential role
in the uptake of stored fat reserves and
conversion of fat by the liver back to
into glucose.   The ability to mobilize fat
tissue to be used as glucose for energy
(and for subsequent weight loss to be
 accomplished) requires Carnitine in the
 process.

Supplementing a cat’s diet with L-Carnitine in amounts approximating 250 to 500 mg per cat per day will aid in mobilizing fat into glucose and will improve the health of a cat that is on a weight loss program.

Feline Obesity
Obesity is a big problem with many domestic cats.

Most types of cats normally weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. A cat can be called obese if it weighs more than 20-25% of its weight, and grossly
obese if that figure reaches 40%
.

More than 40% of all domestic cats in America suffer from obesity or an over-weight condition.

There are various reasons behind a cat’s obesity.
There can be genetic problems or physical problems of a particular type
which can be cured by consultations with a vet, but most cats suffer from obesity because of over-feeding and lack of exercise. Cheap cat food products mainly consisting of carbohydrates and little or no protein are an important reason of this problem.

Nature designed carnivores to look for their own food and burn off calories in the process. But today in our households these pets get to eat with
minimum or no effort.

Domestic cats are usually found lying curled on a sofa or a bed. They often over-eat out of boredom. It is advisable to have more than one cat in a household, so they can socialize among themselves and get at least some exercise.

Fat cats = unhealthy cats
Obesity can cause a host of unwanted conditions in your prized little pet.
These include heart problems, liver diseases, arthritis, diabetes, respiratory problems and so forth, and these in turn make a cat prone to
many infectious diseases.

Your cat is what you feed it
A cat needs flesh as a regular component of its diet. Meats and fishes contain lots of protein and fat, and little carbohydrate. Studies show that cats don’t have an adequate production of the enzymes that help to digest carbohydrates in humans and dogs. An ideal diet of a carnivore should consist of 40-45% Protein, 30% Fat and very little carbohydrate.

A cat should not be fed too much at a time, rather a cat owner should feed it 3 to 4 times a day with small amounts of food. A study shows that a normal-sized full-grown cat should be fed 1.80 pounds of appropriate food at a time.

As a caring cat owner, consider buying some small, bouncy, colorful toys to interest your pet in indoor activities. It needs to burn off the calories
it takes in. Once you have got them moving, the process will continue itself – the more excess weight your cat sheds, the more playful it will become.
